The Rosedale Library is going to be replaced with a new, larger, full-service library. A full-service library will offer separate spaces for adults, teens, and children. It will offer a space for story time and other engaging library programs. It will have quiet study rooms and space for more of everything including books, computers, and seating.
DC Public Library is currently exploring options for the best location for the new full-service library. These options include expanding the current library on site as well as finding space nearby to accommodate approximately 20,000 square feet.
The project has been funded at $24.5 million in fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Once a location is finalized, design and construction will take approximately 4 years to complete.
The library will continue to seek input from both community members, local elected officials and other key stakeholders throughout the inventory process.
Community Engagement Opportunities
Community input is always a critical part of designing a new DC Public Library location and we are committed to ensuring that residents have input into both choosing the location and designing the new library.
To do this, we have started an ongoing conversation with the neighbors of Rosedale. In the summer of 2023, we engaged with key stakeholders including ANC Commissioner, Friends of the Library and other community leaders. In January 2024, Library officials attended a community meeting.
